Crime Novel Quotes
Finished PD James' The Lighthouse (2005) last night. Great setting, on an isolated island off England that serves as a place of private, quiet retreat for VIPs. My favourite part of the book was the last few pages, after the mystery has been solved and the detectives remain on the island (because of a quarantine related to SARS).
Only noted one passage to share:
"[Dalgliesh] walked in a confusion of emotions -- longing, hope and dread. ... He who loved language had lost all confidence in words, particularly those spoken by telephone. Truth between lovers should be written, to be weighed at leisure and in solitude, or, -- better -- spoken face to face." [I'd expand "Truth between lovers" to "Truth between friends and intimates."]
